Course Synopsis

This course is an exploratory, first course in the knowledge of building construction primarily for students in building disciplines. However, it introduces the students to general knowledge of building structures. As a theoretical course, the focus is to impart useful skills on the students in order to enhance their building vocabulary level and prepare them for other specialised building courses to be encountered at higher levels. Topics to be covered include definition of the term Building, identification of various parts of building. Classification and description of building materials, properties of building materials: physical and mechanical properties. Natural stones, Clay, Brick and Blocks, cement, metals and concrete, ceramics, asbestos, timber, plywood, wallboards, bituminous products, glass/glazing, plastic and paints.
